On the south bank are the Port Wine 'caves' where the blending of the famous Port Wine takes place.The wine is produced in the terraced vineyards of the upper reaches of the river around Regua and Pinhao. In years gone by, it used to be transported downstream on a dangerous journey by boat. Today the river has a series of dams and cruise vessels are able to cross the breadth of Portugal. Guimaraes which used to be the capital city is in the Minho region and Braga which is the ‘religious’ capital of Portugal.
