Alto Minho, also known as Costa Verde (The Green Coast) in Portugal has accommodation in manor houses self catering villas and Pousadas but not the hotels catering for the mass market.

It gets its name from the vegetation which remains green throughout the year. It is undeveloped with small fields surrounded by grape vines and granite walls. It is an area of great beauty.

It is mountainous with the Minho and Lima Rivers crossing from the east to the sea in the west.

In former times, this region was a favourite place with the wealthy who chose to build their Manor Houses here and today, many of these beautiful houses have converted guest accommodation.

Other houses can be rented as self catering Villas or, if you prefer more rustic, simple accommodation, then some owners have converted the former estate workers Cottages into guest accommodation.

The main town is Viana do Castelo, a beautiful and interesting, old sailing port. Ponte de Lima and Ponte de Barca are in the river valley further inland.

The River Minho runs between Portugal and Spain and on the border are the historic towns of Caminha, Cerveira, Valenca and Moncao.
