Looking at Sintra's beautiful landscape from the Palace, one can understand why Lord Byron loved this little town so much that he bought a house on the same road. It was here that he wrote some of his famous poetry including "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage"

The town has changed little from those past times and so has retained its unique charm. It is still has green woodlands, dotted with Castles and Palaces similar to the beautiful Palacio of Seteais.

The Lords of Lisbon, the Governors in the days of the rule by the Moors, had their palaces in the town. When the Portuguese were able to retake this part of the country, Sintra became the summer residence of the Kings of Portugal.
In the 18th and 19th Centuries, various prominent British travellers found a new 'Arcadia' in Sintra's cool, wooded heights, recording the old Spanish proverb: "To see the world and leave out Sintra is to go blindly about".

Sintra loops around a series of green and wooded ravines, a confusing place in which to get your bearings. Getting around involves a fair amount of walking or alternatively, a ride in a horse and carriage.

There is the Moorish Castle to visit and, a walk of an hour or so will bring you to the Palacio da Pena above the town. The Palacio da Pena is a wild fantasy of domes, towers, ramparts and walkways, and is approached through mock Manueline gateways and a drawbridge.

Forty five minutes walk along a leafy lane brings you to the luxuriant gardens of Monserrate which are well worth a visit.
