Fortaleza
do Guincho was built on the orders of the King Joao IV in 1642. It
is situated 30 minutes by car from Lisbon International Airport and 10
minutes from the centre of Cascais.
Hotel Fortaleza do Guincho has 27 ensuite bedrooms including 3 junior suites all beautifully furnished. The rooms have terraces, air conditioning, direct dial telephone, Satellite television and mini bar. Faciltites at the hotel include Restaurant, Bar, a baby-sitting service, currency exchange, wireless internet in all areas of the hotel, car parking and, all major credit cards are accepted. The
hotel does not have a swimming pool as it is situated at the edge of the
sea at "Praia do Guincho" (Guincho beach). This is a great
sweeping beach with crashing Atlantic rollers and is a superb place for
surfing or windsurfing. World championships have been held here.
The nearby coastal road has several large restaurants specialising in locally caught fish dishes. The restaurants all have varying, breathtaking views of the breaking rollers from their terraces. Cascais is now a major resort and is very popular in the summer months and also at weekends. It has has three beaches along its beautiful esplanade and is very well served with a regular train service from Lisbon. In
a few places, Cascais still retains the character of its past as a small
fishing village. There is a lively market on Wednesday's, as well
as the Sunday evening bullfights which always attract a large local crowd.
Also worth a visit is the afternoon fish market which takes place on a promontory between the Ribeira and Rainha beaches at around 5 pm. Back
at the hotel the Restaurant, with its breathtaking panoramic view, serves
an exceptional "Haute Cuisine" designed to satisfy those who regard gastronomy
as one of the greatest pleasures in life.
The wine list offers a selection of 250 wines from Portugal, France, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Germany, America and Australia. An airport pick up is available on request, at an extra charge, in a luxurious air conditioned Mercedes mini bus with an English speaking driver. There are a number of excellent golf courses in the area, please click here for details. The beautiful town of Sintra, which has been classified as a World Heritage SIte by UNESCO, is well worth visiting. Also, the Sintra / Cascais Natural Park. |
