Porto is the second town in Portugal and sits at the mouth of the Douro river. On the south bank are the Port Wine 'caves' where the blending takes place. 

The wine is produced in the terraced vineyards of the upper reaches of the rive around Regua.  It used to de transported downstream on a dangerous journey by boat. 

Today the river is a series of dams and cruise vessels can cross the breadth of Portugal.

In the Region is Guimaraes which was the capital of Portugal in the early period as a nation,

There is also Braga which is the religious capital of the country.
