| The
original house and chapel were built by Caldeira de Mendanha, a friend
and rival of the "Marques de Pombal".
The
interior of the house can best be described as relaxed elegance. The furnishings
and decor reflect the opulence of earlier times when trade with Brazil
and India was at its height.
The imposing facade of the Solar can be seen from the road and the entrance, carved in granite, displays the original owner's coat of arms. The 18th century chapel has also been restored to its former glory by the present owners. Solar de Alvega has two sitting rooms, a dining room where breakfast is served, and a downstairs cloakroom. If required, dinner based on traditional recipes, maybe arranged on request. One of the rooms has a magnificent fireplace and its wonderfully furnished. The
house has 6 double bedrooms, all are equipped with air conditioning and
private bathroom. Four of the bedrooms are on the first floor, they are
beautifully furnished with great attention to detail. They are very spacious
and could easily accommodate an extra bed.
The
remaining two bedrooms are located on the second floor and are smaller.
Each has a shower and there is a separate bathroom.
The waterfall can also be seen from the swimming pool which is equipped with massage and has a depth varying from 1,20 to 1,80 metres. The dimensions are 13 x 5 metres. The sound of the waterfall is wonderfully relaxing on a hot summer's day. Overlooking
the stream is a large patio area and adjacent to this is a function room
of 250 square meters. It is ideal for weddings, banquets, conferences etc.
with a seating capacity for up to 180 persons. There are separate male
and female toilets and an industrial kitchen which has its own toilet for
the caterers.
The owners still maintain the old pump, built in the 1940's which used to provide electricity for the village. This house is located on the borders of the Ribatejo, Alentejo and Beira Baixa regions and is less than 1 hours drive from the Templar Castles of Belver, Abrantes, Almourol and Torres Novas. A few kms away visitors will find a wide range of activities, riding school, boating, golf driving range, restaurants and the historic towns of Abrantes and Tomar. A total of four cottages are also available. |
