The Douro Valley, covered with vineyards that stretch as far as you can see, illustrates a way of life that came with the introduction of the grapes by the Romans.

On the river, leisure boats go up and down taking the most attractive method of transport through the valley. Quinta de S. Jose, has a private quay where some of the boats stop on their journey.

The unusual architecture together with an idyllic location make of Quinta de Sao Jose a place to discover and remember.

The grape harvest or "vindimas" is a magical moment that takes place in late September bringing a colourful atmosphere to the region. Workers from many regions are in the vineyards picking the grapes and the lanes are full of them being transported to the adegas.

If you are lucky you will be invited to assist in making the wine in the traditional manner of rolling up your trouser legs, taking off your shoes and socks and treading the grapes in a huge vat.

In the estate there are three adjoining cottages which have been carefully restored to provide guest accommodation.

The "Blue House" has two twin bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a sitting room with an open fireplace and a kitchenette. Private outdoor terrace with views over the river.

The "Pink House" is a two bedroomed cottage with a large sitting room and a dining room with kitchenette. Both bedrooms have ensuite facilities.

The "Brown Room" is a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom. It is located in the former estate worker's cottage, next to the main house.

Breakfast is served each morning in the S. Jose House dining room and evening meals can also be served by prior arrangement. Guests also have the use of the living room and all communal facilities.

All the cottages have television, fridge, central air conditioning and heating.

In addition to these cottages, there is an independent two bedroomed unit about 80 metres away from the main house, which is usually rented on a self catering basis.

If all cottages are taken together it gives a total of 7 double bedrooms. The dining room in the main house is adequate for 14 people being the maximum occupancy.

Outside there is a swimming pool in the lawned garden with views over the valley filled with the vineyards.

Quinta de Sao Jose is located about 135 kilometres from Porto airport and approximately 35 kilometres from Regua.

Pets are not allowed.
