Running from the Spanish border in the East the Douro river runs through spectacular scenery emerging into the sea at Porto (Oporto) on the west coast.

The oldest wine demarcated region in the world is crossed by the river passing through steeply terraced hills and mountains.

To tame it, a series of dams were constructed which have added to its great beauty.

Regua is usually appointed as the capital of the wine producing region.

The riverside area of Porto in 1996 and the grape growing area for Port Wine in 2001 have been designated by UNESCO as World Heritage sites.
